Thunder Bay Hospital

Thunder Bay, Ontario

The desired effect of the designers was to bring in the natural beauty of wood and sunlight to the sterile interior of a hospital. Evoking the many wooden trestles of the area, the architect chose 16 sided Glulam columns to support an inverted truss. Using renewable resource like Glulam in concert with a design that used the sun as both light and heat source makes this facility a truly ‘GREEN’ building.

  • Exceeds fire code requirement for performance
  • Budget pricing showed that Glulam (including fire suppression) would be less expensive than steel
  • The successful completion of this project has led to further use of Glulam in hospital applications.
